Argus Biomass Conference 2025: Bioenergy at the Heart of Global Transitions
The 2025 Argus Biomass Conference in London brought together over 450 key players from across the biomass supply chain to tackle pressing industry challenges and opportunities. With a strong focus on market trends, industrial applications, and policy developments, the event reaffirmed the critical role of biomass in achieving net-zero goals.
While Europe works towards energy independence and decarbonization, sustainable biomass is gaining traction in hard-to-abate industries like steel, cement, and aviation. At the same time, policy frameworks are evolving, creating both opportunities and challenges for businesses looking to navigate an increasingly complex regulatory landscape. Bioenergy Europe’s Policy Director Irene di Padua and Membership Director Manolis Karampinis took the stage to share key insights on some critical topics.
Irene di Padua’s panel explored the future of carbon removals and storage policies, examining how frameworks such as EU ETS, CRCF, and RED III interact and what this means for biomass assets. She also explored the long-term viability of CCUS-powered biomass in meeting sustainability goals.
Manolis Karampinis led a panel on the market’s shifting dynamics, guiding a discussion on EUDR implementation challenges, the readiness of voluntary certification schemes under REDIII, and the impact of broader sustainability policies like CSRD and the LULUCF Directive on the market.
Besides policies, on day one of the conference, Argus Media and its Women’s Network organised the Women in Biomass Panel, to discuss the challenges of women working across the biomass sector. The panel featured three professionals, who shared their opinion and experiences. Irene di Padua, Amparo Arellano and Samantha Smith recognised the key role of valuable leaderships and mentorships for women in a men-dominated sector, as it often happens in the energy field. The industry is undergoing a change in this direction and Bioenergy Europe contributed to this shift with its new board election rules in favour of gender equality.
Finally, Bioenergy’s Europe Communications team was awarded the Argus Biomass Industry Award for Best Practice in Policy Advocacy, with the 2025 RESolutions initiative, within the its.possible campaign. Bioenergy Europe is proud to see its commitment recognised by Argus Media and the jury.
Engaging and contributing to industry events like the Argus Biomass Conference is a strategic investment in the future of bioenergy. As markets and policies evolve, staying informed and actively shaping the conversation is crucial.
