Bioenergy and Competitiveness: Insights from the Latest Working Group
As Europe works to remain competitive in a rapidly evolving global market, the role of biomass continues to adapt to new expectations and requirements. In the latest working group on competitiveness, Bioenergy Europe members explored key opportunities for sustainable biomass in the maritime and aviation sectors, examined its place in the recently published Clean Industrial Deal, and analysed the Action Plan for Affordable Energy.
Discussions on biomass use in transport highlighted that availability appears sufficient to meet EU targets, but further research and stronger value chains are needed to fully unlock its potential. A presentation by DG GROW provided insights into the Clean Industrial Deal, emphasizing competitiveness as a core priority for the European Commission. With energy security and locally produced energy at the heart of the strategy, bioenergy could play a significant role in the transition. The session also explored available funding mechanisms to support the industry.
The working group concluded with an in-depth look at the Action Plan for Affordable Energy, stressing the role heating should have in it and its connection to key EU policies such as the Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) and the Renewable Energy Directive (REDIII). These discussions help shape a forward-looking approach to bioenergy, reinforcing its role in a more resilient and competitive European energy landscape.
